Dan was born in Salisbury, North
Carolina. He began playing the Trombone in the 6th grade and
moved to Chattanooga in 8th grade. He graduated from Hixson High
School where he played in Marching band, Concert Band, and Jazz band. After
graduating high school in 1974, he put the trombone down for about 20 years.
Dan spent 4 years in the Air Force, three of those years
stationed at RAF Bentwaters, England. While in the Air Force he married Debbie, his high school
sweetheart. They have two children-
a daughter, Darah, who is the Tennis Coach at Tennessee Wesleyan College in
Athens Tennessee, and a son, Dale, who
plays trombone (what else!?) in the UTC band.
In 1993, a friend invited Dan and Debbie (who plays clarinet) to join the
Soddy Daisy Community band. Dan’s began playing periodically with
other members at church for special events. It soon became apparent that Dan
still loved music and desired to
play the trombone on a more advanced level. He invested in a new horn, a
King 3B, and began to sit in with whomever and wherever he could. Dan’s
friend from church, Jim Hill, invited him to hear the Sweet Georgia Sound
play in March 2006. Dan became a regular member after being invited to
practice with the group on several occasions.
Dan is an avid tennis player who plays on the average of twice a week. He
has participated in local, state and regional tournaments. Not only does he
enjoy the exercise, but tennis also benefits his lung capacity. In 2006,
Dan’s team participated in the Eastern Nationals Mixed Doubles, and won!
Dan enjoys all kinds of instrumental music, but has always had a love for
the big band era. He lists Glenn Miller and Urbie Green as inspirations.
Dan and Debbie reside in Red Bank. Dan is co-owner of Kitchens of
Chattanooga, a company that sells kitchen and bath cabinetry and
countertops.
