David
Thompson was born in Knoxville, TN, but moved several times during his
youth. He started playing trumpet in the 5th grade, at Normal Park
Elementary School in north Chattanooga. He started high school in
Florence, AL, but graduated from West High in Morristown, TN. David earned a
spot in the East Tennessee Band in his junior and senior year and was first
alternate to the Tennessee All-State Band during his senior year. He
then attended Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN, and majored in
Electrical Engineering. As an engineer for TVA, David works with large generators and other electrical equipment at the dams.
David played in the TN Tech marching band
during his freshman year, but then retired his trumpet for 7 years.
His wife, a piano player, talked him into resurrecting his horn so they
could literally make beautiful music together. He has played with
the Woodland Park Baptist Church Orchestra, Chattanooga Concert Band, and
Mid-South Concert Band. David started playing with Sweet Georgia Sound
about a year after the group first formed. Since 2000 David has been
the band's business manager. He has also been a substitute for
the Doc Shaffer Band. He has been part of the pit orchestras for
musicals at the Signal Mountain Playhouse, including: Carousel, Annie Warbucks, Li'l Abner, Oliver, Music Man, and Peter Pan. David has
played for a lot of weddings (and has played Taps at a lot of military
funerals during high school). David cites Bill Chase as a musical
influence during his formative years and Phil Driscoll later on.
David resides with his very understanding
wife, Sheila, and their sons Matthew and Joshua. The musical tradition
continues - Matthew plays trumpet and piano, and Joshua plays alto sax and
piano. |
