Lucien
W. “Chip” Miller, Jr., 52, of Rossville, passed away Thursday, October 12,
2006 at his residence.
A native and lifelong
resident of the Rossville & Ft. Oglethorpe areas, Lucien was a 1972 graduate
of Rossville High School and received his Bachelor of Music degree from
Berry College in 1977. After working for several years as a high school
band director, Mr. Miller studied theology at Emory University in Atlanta
and completed his theological studies at Covington Seminary in 1990 where he
received his Master of Divinity degree. In 1992 he completed the Master of
Music Education degree at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago,
Illinois. His graduate studies in music emphasized instrumental pedagogy as
well as conducting and rehearsal techniques. Lucien was the founding
conductor of the Mid-South Concert Band and served for 8 years. He
is an original member of the “Sweet Georgia Sound” playing in the
trombone section and serving as treasurer of the band, He was a former
member of “The Hypodermics,” a jazz group in the Savannah area. His
experience as a conductor includes band, orchestra, stage musicals,
including “Dames at Sea,” “Celebration,” and “My Fair Lady,” and church
choir.
Mr. Miller retired from the
Catoosa County School System in 2003, having served as an educator at
Westside Elementary School. At the time of his death, he was designing
music curriculum at Covington Theological Seminary. His parents, Lucien W.
Miller, Sr., & Barbara “Babs” O’Kelley Miller preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife
of 28 years, Gudrun “Gee” Miller; son and family, Robert, Tiffany, & Aurora;
brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike & Sandy Miller of Rossville, Doug &
Barbara Miller, Ringgold; several nieces & nephews also survive.
